Queen Elizabeth's Maid of Honor Lady Mary Russell Died the Night Before State Funeral

Lady Mary Russell, one ofQueen Elizabeth’smaids of honor on her coronation day, died just one day before the late monarch’sstate funeralon September 19. She was 88. The Timesobituary section reported the death, detailing that the wife and mother of five died “peacefully” at home with her family on September 18. She and her husband, David, shared three sons, Anthony, Philip and Jason, and two daughters, Arabella and Mariana, as well as 12 grandchildren, according to the obituary.

Queen Elizabeth's Meeting with Scotland's First Minister Came amid a Major Announcement

On Wednesday, the 96-year-old monarch received the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, during an audience at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. On Monday, the Piper to the Sovereign closed her committal ceremony as he played her final lament. Pipe Major Paul Burns of the Royal Regiment of Scotland played the lament “Sleep, Dearie, Sleep.” Pipe Major Burns began playing from the doorway between the chapel of St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle and the Dean’s Cloister, walking away as he played.
